What are the basic steps in the naturalization process?

Those in Pennsylvania who are expecting apply for citizenship may not know what to expect in the process of becoming a naturalized American citizen. There are several steps one must take in order to complete the action.

For starters, all necessary applications and documents must be completed. In addition, the individual must have two passport-style photos of themselves available. If necessary, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will ask an applicant to send more information, and it is important to keep a copy of everything that is sent to the USICS. After the application and other information has been received, an appointment will be scheduled for the applicant to provide fingerprints and schedule their interview. At the interview, an applicant will need to bring their permanent resident card and other documents specific to the case.

The applicant will then answer questions about his or her background and take an English and civics test. After that step is completed, the applicant will receive a ceremony date where he or she will be sworn in as a citizen. The final step is to take the oath and become an official citizen of the United States.

Throughout the naturalization process, it may be worthwhile to be represented by a naturalization attorney. An attorney may be able to help an applicant provide all necessary information in a timely manner. Having legal representation may be especially beneficial to those who struggle with English or have questions about the process.
