Obama vows officials violating orders will face consequences

Pennsylvanians may be interested to learn about how President Obama is reacting to a federal judge's recent ruling. The federal judge in Texas halted the president's executive action on immigration, a move that is currently under appeal by the government.

At a town-hall meeting on immigration held in Miami, Florida, on Feb. 25, Obama encouraged attendees to get their paperwork in order so they are prepared to take advantage of the new immigration policies. He indicated that he fully anticipates the federal judge's ruling against his policies will be overturned.

Obama also indicated that any immigration officials who act to violate his orders on immigration will face consequences. He told the audience that new directives have been issued at Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and those who choose to ignore those rules and deport people anyway will be disciplined for those actions. Currently, republicans in the House of Representatives have blocked a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security without riders undoing the president's executive actions. The Senate passed a bill to fund the department that did not include the immigration provisions.

People who are facing deportation may want to discuss their situation with an immigration and naturalization attorney. An attorney may be able to defend against the removal of his or her client. In some cases, an attorney may be able to argue for a bond so his or her client may be released from detention pending resolution of his or her case. Attorneys may also be able to provide advice that is individualized according to his or her client's circumstances regarding how the client may be able to avoid removal and obtain a visa in order to remain in the country as well as to secure permission to work.
