What is next after receiving asylum?

On Behalf of | Jun 26, 2024 | Asylum |

Winning your asylum case is a major step towards building a new life. It means the US government recognizes the danger you face returning to your home country.

The asylum process, however, was often a long and painful period of waiting. So, even after receiving approval, it can be difficult to know what to do next. With the right mindset and support, you can start over and live a new life in safety.

First steps as an asylee

As an asylee, you now have certain rights and benefits like work authorization and public benefits. Here are initial steps you can take:

  • Obtain an official document proving your asylum status.
  • Reach out to a Refugee Resettlement Agency (RRA) for support such as cash, housing and other assistance for a limited time.
  • Apply for a Social Security card to pay taxes and access public benefits.
  • Adjust your status and obtain a green card after one year of receiving asylum.
  • Get a refugee travel document, which is equivalent to a US passport for asylees.

You will need your Social Security and green card when you apply for work, which you may eventually must do.

These are just initial steps. Your attorney can further help you adjust during this stage of your life in the US and advise you on the next ones.

Take care of yourself

It is normal to feel lonely during this period. When healing becomes too difficult, prioritize your mental and physical health. If needed, there are resources available for counseling and support.

Receiving asylum means you can finally leave your fear-filled life behind. It could take more time and effort to create a new one, but it can be worth the wait. So, be patient with yourself and celebrate every achievement along the way.
